Dive Brief:
- Amazon released a TenMarks Summer Math Program app Monday, allowing Kindle users to download the app for free.
- TenMarks covers elementary math through Algebra 2 and Geometry, offering video lessons, assignments, assessments, and real-time tutoring.
- Before Amazon purchased TenMarks in October, the program was only available online or as an iPad app, where it cost $39.95 per student.
Dive Insight:
According to an October press release announcing the purchase, TenMark programs are already used by "tens of thousands of schools". By latching onto an already successful application, Amazon is hoping that it can cut into Apple's slice of the pie.
Amazon has taken other stabs at improving its share of the ed tablet market. In Fall 2012, it launched Whispercast, another free program that allows schools to manage a "fleet of Kindles" and dole out books, papers, and apps electronically.
