Dive Brief:
- Former New York City education chancellor and current Amplify CEO Joel Klein explained to "CBS This Morning" on Tuesday the importance of digital curriculum.
- Klein was promoting the benefits of Amplify's tech and online curriculum, which informs teachers on a student's progress and, in turn, enforces data-driven instruction.
- While Klein was quick to highlight the benefits of technology in classrooms, he also acknowledged its stumbles, like in Los Angeles, where the nation's largest iPad deployment has been placed on hold. Perhaps looking to differentiate his company's tablet from the popular competitor, he stated, "Our technology is all about teaching and learning," while touting ed tech's benefits.
Dive Insight:
"They've gotten real improvements for kids in very challenging environments," Klein told CBS, referring to tablets in classrooms. "Sometimes, you do a big thing and you have to hit the pause button. Not every big thing works exactly as you want it to work."
These are Klein's thoughts on the Los Angeles Unified School District situation. While he notes the project did not work, he is not throwing it out just yet. For Klein, it's all about appropriate integration. As he explains, "If you simply put them [students] in front of a tablet or in front of a computer, it's not going to work. That's why I think the hype is not helpful. I think the thoughtful work has to take place."
