Dive Brief:
- An internal audit of Texas' Fort Worth Independent School District highlights overspending on administrative technology and computers.
- According to the audit, the school spent over $2.7 million on frivolous and unutilized technologies, including a payroll system that was almost immediately problematic.
- The school board president told the Star-Telegram he has not seen the audit and it has yet to be discussed at a board meeting, nor has an audit committee meeting been arranged.
Dive Insight:
Some of the ridiculous findings from the June audit that spanned seven-years: Purchases never being used or touched and the district paying maintenance fees on never-opened gadgets.
But more upsetting than this clearly poor budgeting and management of finances is the fact that the board president has yet to look at the audit. A massive review of the school's finances came back last month revealing gross misspending, and yet that board has still not discussed any of it. Sounds like a dangerous situation. At the end of the day, the board is responsible for the money allocation at schools and, if misspending happens like this, they should be discussing and taking action as soon as the audit comes back. Though in an even better scenario, they wouldn't have allowed spending to occur like this to begin with.
