Dive Brief:
- More universities and colleges are creating chief digital officer positions to help manage online learning and other digital initiatives.
- Part of the reason for the movement may be that higher education institutions believe that they need more structure and accountability for online and digital learning beyond what the chief information officer provides, Campus Technology reported.
- Splitting information technology duties between the CIO, CDO, and potentially other IT silos could dilute campus IT leadership.
Dive Insight:
Campus Technology spoke to five campus IT and digital leaders as panelists for its CDO article, and they discussed their personal experiences in their professional roles. For some colleges and universities, the push to create CDO positions came at the height of excitement about massive open online courses. Some of the panelists say they expect the CDO duties will eventually be absorbed by other positions, including those without digital in their job titles.
