Dive Brief:
- ClassDojo, a behavior management tool, has updated its features, making it easier for parents to stay in the loop when it comes to student behavior.
- The change comes with three different views of the behavioral data via tablet, phone, or computer, so parents, teachers, and students can all track and monitor behavior.
- The update allows teachers and parents to message each other directly.
Dive Insight:
The app came under fire in November when parents, teachers, and privacy law scholars raised mounting concerns over the app's ability to allow teachers to document sensitive data on students without parental consent — and with unclear knowledge of where that data can eventually land.
In response, ClassDojo said that, starting in January, it would dump student behavioral data after one year.
Critics of ClassDojo's "carrot-and-stick" method of giving or taking away points for student behavior still have concerns about the product's overall messaging; however, moves to bring parents and teachers more into the loop may even the playing field and create more of a dialogue.
