Dive Brief:
- The Learning Accelorator and the Hewlett Foundation are investing $2 million in 10 K-12 companies for the creation of open educational resources (OER) in math and language arts.
- The companies, which include LearnZillion and Mathematics Vision Project, have until summer to complete their prototypes.
- A reported $700,000 of the funds will go toward training reviewers and keeping content up-to-date, while the rest of the funds will be divvied up between the companies.
Dive Insight:
OERs are free-to-access documents and media, making them an awesome resource for schools that already have so many other costs. Another cool thing about OERs are that they're sort of like a gift that keeps on giving. Being openly licensed, anyone can build on an idea.
This grant sounds like the ultimate innovation idea, as it pushes companies to build K-12 tools without necessarily having profit at the forefront of their minds.
