Dive Insight:
In April, Civic Enterprises, the Everyone Graduates Center, America's Promise Alliance, and the Alliance for Excellent Education released the 2014 Building a GradNation report, which spotlighted strides made in the U.S. graduation rate, which is reportedly at an all-time high of 80%. While the gains are commendable, another report from Communities in Schools, a network of non-profits in 27 states and the District of Columbia that works to address the dropout epidemic, serves as a reminder that there is still a disconnect when it comes to minority students. According to CIS' research, five inequalities still contribute to high school dropout rates: hunger, poor eyesight, lack of adequate or appropriate clothing, homelessness, and lack of reliable transportation.
