Dive Brief:
- LightSail, a K-12 literacy platform, on Thursday announced the launch of a new digital library containing 200 texts appropriate for elementary through high school students.
- Each text comes with a formative assessment to check for understanding, and the platform monitors students' progress to tailor the reading experience to their abilities.
- While the library is technically free, it is in fact only available to LightSail customers. Additionally, over 80,000 digital texts are available for schools and districts to purchase through the platform.
Dive Insight:
LightSail is another example of traditional products being re-created for easier resource access within schools. Recent years have seen a boom in products aiming to make the lives of students and teachers easier, and the digital literacy department is one of the most bustling. Being able to put this many books at students' fingertips is certainly easier than having them search through a large physical library. With the increasing prevalence of platforms like LightSail, it's also not hard to see how some schools are now free to turn their traditional libraries into collaborative "learning commons."
