Dive Brief:
- The FBI has commenced an investigation into the failed, and possibly unethical, plan to outfit all Los Angeles Unified School District students with iPads.
- On Tuesday, agents confiscated 20 boxes filled with documents pertaining to the $1.3-billion iPad deal.
- Former LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy resigned in October as rumors swirled over possible conflicting interests surrounding the deal between LAUSD and Apple.
Dive Insight:
The rollout of the iPads has been anything but smooth. The program ended in August when Deasy announced that the contract with Apple would be annulled. The problems started well before that, though, as we noted almost a year earlier with our 4 lessons Los Angeles' iPad rollout can teach everyone.
As for those conflicts of interest mentioned above? They reportedly involved previous associations with vendors Pearson and Apple by top-level district officials.
