With an increasingly digital school landscape has also come heightened vulnerability to cyberthreats. The high volume of personal data possessed by school systems coupled with a lack of cybersecurity personnel and resources presents a perfect storm.
Schools are a particularly popular target for ransomware attacks — in which a system is infiltrated by malware that encrypts and blocks access to data unless a ransom is paid. These attacks have cost districts tens of billions of dollars in downtime and ransom payments.
Government agencies including the Federal Communications Commission and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency have developed or proposed resources and strategies to address these concerns, with several announced in recent months.
