Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, school nutrition programs have been firmly in the spotlight. As school closures highlighted during the health crisis’ peak, school meals are sometimes the primary source of nutrition for many students from low-income families.
The challenge of continuing to provide that meal access while also navigating supply chain issues, nutritional requirements and more led lawmakers to grant waiver authority to the U.S. Department of Agriculture in support of schools, alongside additional funding. Most recently, Congress passed the bipartisan Keep Kids Fed Act, extending that waiver authority, including continuing to provide universal meals through summer.
