LearningWrite, an education technology startup focused on language learning and assessment, has unveiled a first of its kind AI-driven tool for improving multilingual writing skills.
LearningWrite allows language teachers to select, assign, and review writing exercises (and for students to complete and submit them) through one efficient and flexible online platform.
Now, LearningWrite’s newly released “Chat Scenario'' activities take writing engagement to the next level. Each scenario presents a student with a situation, setting, and conversation partner – played by a custom-engineered AI assistant driven by the latest large language models. The student then launches into a real-time, text-based discussion to achieve specific conversation goals.
AI Discussion Partners, Real Fluency Gains
Chat Scenarios empower students and teachers to capture the benefits of frequent, high-quality writing practice like never before, providing on-demand access to a language-proficient conversation partner while streamlining assignment creation and feedback.
The new conversation feature builds on LearningWrite’s existing advanced automation tools for accelerating language writing practice. The platform’s auto-grading feature instantly scores students’ writing prompt responses using globally recognized ACTFL and STAMP Test standards, through an algorithm trained on over 40k writing samples evaluated by experienced human raters.
A Long-Awaited Win for Language Education
LearningWrite's multilingual application of AI is a game-changer for building language proficiency, answering a long unmet demand for tools that make writing practice scalable and sustainable.
“Teachers know that writing and conversing in a target language drive language acquisition," explains LearningWrite founder and CEO, Mike Biglan. "But finding, distributing, and grading writing practice assignments has traditionally been time- and effort-intensive, and that makes it hard for overextended teachers to keep up.
We saw an opportunity to use AI to fill that need, and we worked with language educators to make it happen”.
And according to those educators, the results are worth celebrating. “As a teacher, you want to give every student the personalized support they need, every class – but there just isn’t time,” says Spanish educator Sherry Dickerson of Corvallis, Oregon. “With LearningWrite, it’s like having 30 language tutors in my classroom, giving each student individualized practice and feedback. It’s incredible!”
Scaling-Up AI Writing Support
The LearningWrite platform is already being used to streamline language practice and assessment for ELL and world language students, grades 6-12, in several top-50 US school districts, supporting student preparedness for the Seal of Biliteracy Exam, the STAMP Test, and AP Language, Literature, and Culture exams. The rollout of AI chat comes just in time for a major expansion of the platform’s user base.
Currently, the Chat Scenario feature has been soft-launched to select users for testing and feedback. LearningWrite plans to begin a phased regional Chat Scenario release by the beginning of the 2024-25 US academic year.
