More than 17,000 K-12 educators and administrators signed up for the 2025 Science of Reading Week edWebinars held by Lexia, a Cambium Learning Group company. Now all educators will have another opportunity to discover the next steps in their individual journey to literacy leadership. Recordings of the dynamic and thought-provoking webinar series are now available on demand at the edWeb.net website.
In each edWebinar, industry thought leaders and Lexia’s own literacy experts discussed ways to accelerate students’ literacy gains. Cassandra Wheeler, Lexia’s Senior Education Advisor, served as moderator while presenters shared expert insights and resources for implementing evidence-based practices for driving measurable, equitable literacy success.
“This year’s webinar series was designed to have something for educators and administrators at every stage of the science of reading journey, from just starting to nearing mastery,” Lexia Chief Learning Officer Dr. Liz Brooke said. “Zaretta Hammond, author of ‘Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain’ kicked off the week for our live participants by sharing some interesting information about equity, literacy, and closing the opportunity gap.”
Interested educators can find a wealth of information on growing as literacy leaders in the session recordings, available on the edweb.net website at https://home.edweb.net/lexia_sor_2025:
Transformative Leadership in the Science of Reading: Empowering School Administrators
This session featured Dr. Octavia Gray-Essex, Lexia’s senior education advisor; Dr. Gretchen Givens Generett, the dean of Duquesne University’s School of Education in Pittsburgh; Dr. Adrea Truckenmiller, an associate professor at Michigan State University working in Special Education and School Psychology programs; and Dr. Cleveland Mouton, a principal at Caddo Parish Schools in Louisiana. The session focused on actionable strategies designed to meet school administrators wherever they were in their leadership journey.
Focused Leadership in the Science of Reading: Supporting District Administrators
Lexia’s National Literacy Consultant Dr. Lori Silver spoke with Dr. Delia Racines, the founder of the From Insight to Equity consultancy; Dr. Laura Rowley, the ELA curriculum specialist for Wichita USD 259 in Kansas; and Dr. Aaron Lyon, professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the director of Research Institute for Implementation Science in Education (RIISE) at the University of Washington. The four discussed how to effectively lead change management at every stage of districts’ science of reading journeys.
Influential Leadership in the Science of Reading: Literacy Advocacy for Teachers
Wheeler spoke with John Arthur, 2021 Utah Teacher of the Year; Rhonda Nelson, a first grade teacher and Lexia LETRS facilitator at Bettendorf Community School District in Iowa; and Dr. Jeanne Wanzek, associate professor of special education at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. Attendees learned how the science of reading enables them to expand their instructional capacities, champion evidence-based literacy practices, and create lasting, positive outcomes for students—without adding more to their already full plates.
